How do I become a “Morning Person”?
I really want to be one of those people I see walking/jogging/biking through my neighborhood at 6 am every morning. I mean they are everywhere here! Some running in groups or walking their dogs. I want to have that kind of dedication. And pretty much every night I say that I will get up early the next day I end up hitting snooze for 2 hours. By then I have to get ready for work and it is too late to get anything done. I’m frusterated and need motivation.
I have hit a plateau in my weightloss and need to work on my cardio more. I have not lost (or gained) any weight in over 3 weeks. I started strength training at Curves 2 weeks ago so I’m hoping that, along with more cardio will do it.
Reasons I want to exercise in the AM:
- When I workout in the morning, I tend to eat healthier for the rest of the day.
- Its too hot to workout at any other time here in FL.
- My puppy really needs to be walked first thing in the morning. (She is a GREAT walking buddy and can easily do 3 -4 miles with me)
- My family will all be asleep still, so I can focus only on myself (and the puppy)
- I will be able to get more out of my morning if I am up early.
I don’t know…but when you figure it out…let me know!
: )
I actually struggled with that this morning! It was REALLY hard and I really REALLY didn’t want to do it. The thing that got me out of bed THIS morning was reading Shape magazine last night. Here are some things that help me:
1. putting the alarm clock on the opposite side of the room so I have to get up to turn it off. (Once I’m awake I feel bad for not getting up and out the door to excercise)
2. Setting my cell phone as a backup alarm…it’s super annoying.
3. Knowing that this ONE HOUR throughout my ENTIRE day is the ONLY TIME I will have to focus on ME. (When you have kids it’s hard to get that precious time to yourself…and you deserve it!)
4. Do something you look forward to in the morning. For example- Swimming is my favorite thing to do. Me and my husband got a membership ($25) at the local pool so we can lap swim. I look forward to it because it’s not an exercise that discourages me. I DREAD running…but I know I have to do it if I want some MAJOR calorie burning- so on THOSE mornings good luck waking me up. Because of that I go for a 15-20 minute walk/jog and afterwards come back and do some yoga which for reason number 3- i REALLY look forward to. It makes the running part seem not so bad…..sort of.
hope what helps me helps you!
I really want to get up in the morning to excercise too. This has always been difficult for me. Good luck!!
I’m not a morning person at all. What motivates me to wake up in the morning is that I can walk into the YMCA and get on any machine I want or any treadmill at that hour. I wake up at 4:40 arrive at the Y by 5:30 and am done my cardio by 6:30 on days when I don’t train with my trainer. I use to go at night and there were just too many people there, I had to wait for what I wanted to use. Also all day long at work I would be thinking to myself…boy am I tired and then I still have to go home, make dinner and go to the Y. It was depressing. So now I go in the morning and think to myself…my cardio is done, but if I want I can go and do more and get ahead. It’s hard at first, but once you start to do it, it gets easier waking up early. Take one day at a time and do it. It took me about two whole weeks to get up early…hehehe. I would wake up at 4:40 and think should I go…and it was always no, then wait for the next alarm to wake me at 6:40 for work…I got sick of hearing myself say no that I got up one day and went
Best thing I ever did for myself.
All I can say is just do it. I was just like you but I started working out in the a.m. before my kids woke up and I was amazed at how much LESS stress I had during the day. I wasn’t worried about exercising all day long. It was hard at first but it gets easier. I have also had a lot more, consistent weeks working out whereas before who knows when I would get it in.
You received a lot of wonderful ideas from people who are most definitely motivated. Kuddos! to them. They are awesome! Maybe to start out you can get up to shut your alarm clock off, keep it far from your bed as someone else suggested. Once you are up either go to your fridge to see a full length picture of yourself on it or go to a full length mirror in your house and ask yourself when you will be truly happy looking at either of those images(pictures)again and make sleeping in the reward for altering those images to your liking. Maybe you can put a picture of yourself near the alarm clock also. There is nothing like a visual to help us get focused. Start out with a short routine and gradually increase your exercise regimen as your motivation increases and it will, trust me! A few sips of coffee, hot cocoa whatever! before your routine will increase your stamina, your endurance. I do not know about your way of thinking but that would sure motivate me if I was not already a morning person. Make sure those pictures depict what you least like about your physical appearance. All the luck in the world to you and be sure to let me know all about your inevitable progress following these suggestions.
i’m not a morning person either, but i’m still up by 7:30 everyday (usually more like 6), and i wake up without an alarm. i used to be a lot worse (and i am a lot worse in winter without the sun), i don’t know what the difference is… for one thing, i drink a lot of water before bed to get to my goal, so i have to pee in the morning, and i’m usually excited and hungry for breakfast, and i start out everyday on buddyslim (something enjoyable, and sets my day off geared toward weight loss).
Thanks for the advice everyone! I WILL be waking up early tomorrow!
remind yourself that you like mornings. seriously, make a mantra “i am a morning person. mornings are MY time” i know it feels silly, but focusing on what you WANT will help it materialize. it will actually start changing your mind
also, i might put a posty note on the alarm clock with the mantra or your list up there
i am working through the same thing right now. good luck!
